Sands of Time

One of my favourite games while I was in school is Prince of Persia, a third person action-adventure game.  This past weekend, we watched movie Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, based on the game!

The producers didn’t follow the game story but the premise was similar.  However, I had the pleasure sitting beside a hardcore gamer who seemed to be upset that the game storyline didn’t follow the movie. 

“It’s just a movie woman!”.  Well, I yelled at her in my head.  Overall, I really enjoyed it!

I thought it would be fun for an Etsy search for any products that were tagged, “sands of time” but nothing that is an hourglass, which would be an obvious reference to a sands of time tag line

Kym of Herro Hachi first discovered me with a compliment on my origami Etsy Canada late last year.  I was shocked since I don’t really focus on my shop like I should.  Of course I checked our her Etsy shop at the time and found her Engrish shirts so appealing because I completely “get it” as a fellow Asian.  A few months later, Christina of Akane Designs Blog did feature interview and now I’m a great fan of Kym’s work.  I just need to buy one of her shirts at a show since she’s a local.

Wickaninnish Gallery - Grandville Island, Vancouver, BC

I’ve been reminiscing lately about a school project I did back in school.  Every team had to take on a real life project offered by local business in order to graduate.  The projects ranged from website building to consultation services.  My team bided on several but our program head deemed they were too easy for our skill set.  He assigned us the project no one requested.  The owner wanted to market her products online to international markets.  It was quite challenging but I’m proud to say that my team got the the top mark in our program!

Wickaninnish Gallery

The gallery was founded by its owner Patrica Rivard in 1987.  It is named after her Great Great Grandfather, Chief Wickaninnish, who as a powerful chief of Nuu-chah-nulth in the late 1700s.

Wickaninnish Gallery is a unique gallery & gift shop that offers a wide selection high quality art and jewellery created by Northwest Coast First Nation artists. 

They have beautiful jewellery crafted from sterling silver or gold.  The necklace pictured was tagged in the company's profile on the Aboriginal Tourism Association of BC website.  I wish I could show you more.  If you are ever in BC near Granville Island, I urge you to go and take a look.

Interesting Find on the Web: Tori’s Eye

Tori’s eye is a Twitter visualization tool, inspired by paper craft and origami.  This was a project done by the parent company Quodis which is a website and web application developer in Portugal.  It’s a visual and technical experiment implemented using only standard XHTML/CSS and JavaScript.
In a nutshell, this is a twitter search.  You enter something in the search box and the flying origami birds will carry a tweet based on your search criteria.  When you catch a bird with your mouse pointer, you can read a recent tweet. 
I really like it because they incorporated origami and makes these searches more fun.  I did a search on my twitter name and all the birds carried my most recent tweet!

My Son’s Handmade Birthday Cards!

We held our son’s first birthday this past weekend.  We just held a BBQ with friends and family.  I want to share with you a couple of handmade cards my son got.  They are currently being displayed on our mantle.

This was designed by Charmaine from Lucky Charms Card Collection.  I really the offset look and love the embellishments like the ribbon.  She used a star punch for the hat.

This card is designed by our friend Twyla.  I like how she layered embossed paper behind the fish.  The bubbles were a really cute touch.

I love handmade cards and give it a try.  I quickly realized that this hobby wasn’t for me.  I’m a technical person my nature.  Origami is a very technical craft.   Card marking, there aren’t any rules.  The only true limit is your imagination.  I love looking at other people card designs but that’s pretty much it.  I’m a handmade card lookie loo. 

I think I just admitted I’m boring and unimaginative haha.

Introducing Lucky Charms Pin Collection

My sister-in-law who runs Lucky Charms Card Collection was recently bitten by the pin trading bug during the recent Vancouver 2010 Olympic games.  She never knew her browsing through hundreds of pins hung on a display rack would lead to a new passion.   Well, she met a few collectors, made friends with some traders and by the height of the games, she already knew which pins were limited edition, which were rare and knew mini histories of the most sought after pins!  She was pin trading like mad!  She loved every minute of it. 

She enjoyed it so much, she wanted to create a place where people could come together and pin trade after the games were over.  So after a little research, she opened up an sister company, Lucky Charms Pin Collection.  Her club already gained a reputation as a friendly place for pin traders to come together.  The first swap meet took place on Easter Weekend this past April.  The event had a overwhelming warm response with nearly 400 participants.   A second pin swap is taking place next week and I’m sure it’ll attract even more traders.
